What is a BSB Number?

The BSB number stands for (Bank-State-Branch) is a six-digit numeric code with dash that identifies individual financial institutions and branches within Australia. The BSB code is similiar to swift code which is used as branch identifier and bank account number to identify the beneficiary account for a money transfer. According to Australian Paper Clearing System (APCS) financial institutions are required to include BSB and bank account numbers on cheques, at the bottom of the cheque to identify the specific bank account number to be debited for paper based transactions but EFT (Electronic fund transfers) transactions between bank accounts the BSB and bank account numbers must be given for the accounts to be debited as well as beneficiary accouts.

Structure of BSB Number:

The bank state branch number format consists of three parts: AAB-XYZ.
The first two digits identify the bank in Australia. (AA) specify the bank or financial institution where the money is being sent.
The third digit (B) identifies the Australian state bank branch is located.
The last three digits (XYZ) uniquely identify branch, or the address of the bank branch.
